Fifteen

When we got to Charlotte and Delphina’s cabin in the Great Woods, Zee and Danika brought Jonathan DuPont inside and tied the old man up on a chair in the basement, locking him in there despite his protests. Upstairs, we all had a drink as we came down off the adrenaline, taking a little time before we had to interrogate our prisoner. Drake and I went outside for a smoke while he summoned all the Hellbastards back, all of whom seemed to be fine and relatively unscathed by their daredevil antics. It must be great to have such thick skin.

“Great job, guys,” Drake said to them all. “You did me proud tonight.”

“Thanks, boss,” Scroteface said as they all stood with big grins on their green-skinned faces.

“What about the guys in those vehicles? I take it none are still alive?”

“Not after we’d finished with them,” Cracka said. “It huge bloodbath, boss.”

Drake nodded approvingly. “I wouldn’t expect anything less, Cracka. Why don’t you all go inside and watch TV for a while. I’m sure the girls can lend you a guest room to chill in.”

“They have cable here?” Reggie asked.

“Eh, I’m not sure, Reggie. I think they have DVDs, though.”

“Porn?” Snot Skull said. “I’m in the mood for some porn.”

Drake shook his head. “I dunno, Snotty. You’ll have to ask. I doubt it. I saw Last Action Hero there, though.”

“Meh,” Reggie said. “What about Die Hard?“

“They definitely have Die Hard With A Vengeance.”

Reggie nodded. “I can work with that. Let’s go guys.”

I smiled as I watched the little demons go inside the house. “I think they’re growing on me,” I said.

“Yeah,” Drake said. “It happens. Nice job driving tonight, by the way.”

“Thanks. Things got hairy there for a bit.”

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said with a grin.

“You just love being in the shit, don’t you, Drake?”

Drake took a last drag of his cigarette before grinding it underfoot. “Don’t you?”

I said nothing as we went inside.
